Adopting AI Is Like Getting a Puppy

Everybody wants a dog.
It doesn't matter if you grew up in a house full of them or you've never so much as held a leash. The idea is irresistible. Unconditional love. A loyal companion. Somebody genuinely thrilled to see you walk through the door. What could possibly be better?
AI lands the exact same way. Whether you've been living in it for two years or you're still a little nervous to open the app, the pitch is impossible to resist. It's going to change your life. Save you time. Make you smarter, faster, and better at basically everything. The whole package.

So you decide to get one.
First Question: Which Puppy?
And right away you hit the question every new dog owner faces. What kind?
They're all beautiful. They're all friendly at the shelter. But a Border Collie and a Basset Hound are not signing up for the same life. Are you looking for a running partner or a lap dog? A working dog or a companion? Do you want just one — or are you the kind of person who somehow ends up with three?
AI is the same interview. Which model? Which tool? The one that writes, the one that codes, the one that just wants to talk. And here's the part people miss: the right one isn't the "best" one. It's the one that actually fits the life you're living.
Puppy or grown dog? The shiny cutting-edge breed, or the dependable one that's already been around the block? Every choice is a trade-off.
Then You Bring The Puppy Home
And the journey begins.
Here's the thing nobody warns you about: it knows so much and so little at the very same time. It knows it's supposed to pee. It has no earthly idea it shouldn't do it on your rug. It will do anything for a treat — and in AI's case, the treats are tokens. It's eager, it's motivated, it's a genius and a complete idiot in the same breath.
Everything is a chew toy. Every new trick is instantly its favorite trick. It nails something brilliant, then chews through your favorite shoe five minutes later.
And you learn — fast — that the magic was never in the puppy. It's in the training.
Rewards, corrections, patience, repetition. That's how "chaos with paws" slowly turns into an actual partner.
And Then There's the Forgetting
Your AI puppy will astonish you with what it knows... and then forget where you were seven prompts ago.
You taught it the trick. It nailed the trick. Now it's staring at you like you two have never met. So you teach it again. And again.
Learning to work around that goldfish memory — setting up the routine, repeating the cues, keeping the context close at hand — is honestly most of the job right now.
Here's the Honest Truth About Your AI Puppy
Today's AI tools are one-year-old puppies.
Brilliant. Bottomless potential. And absolutely going to pee on the rug and hit you with the zoomies for a while yet. We need them in our lives — that part is completely real. But anyone selling you a fully trained, sit-stay-heel service dog is selling you a puppy in a costume.
The good news? Puppies grow up. And the people putting in the reps now — learning their dog, setting the boundaries, building the routine — are the ones who'll end up with the loyal, capable companion everyone else is still out there chasing.
So get the dog. Just don't act surprised by the chewed shoes and the sleepless nights.
Every great dog was once a disaster on four legs who peed on the rug.
